Weren’t You Ever Scared?
2019-01-25

By: Carrie Hughes

Last week during one of our classes a student asked me “Weren’t you ever scared?” My response was, to my surprise, an emotional one with tears welling up in my eyes. Of course, I I had been scared. In 1983 I was a young, single mom receiving no child support. A bad marriage and an ill father forced me to make a decision that would alter my life forever. One of the products of that decision is that I had a fairly successful career in real estate.

Being afraid was part of a daily life I never stopped experiencing. Whether it was being scared that practicing real estate was not the right choice, or divorce would leave me penniless, or my children would not be raised properly, I always operated in some small spirit of fear. As I look back over the years, I see a pattern, however, where I allowed my faith to operate in my choices, and fears got smaller and smaller. Life dealt some harsh blows, but growth came out of them.

TEAM Hughes Real Estate School students see me as confident, sure of the subject matter I teach, and filled with tons of life lessons that are examples of various concepts we teach. What they don’t see, however, is that to some small degree, I don’t think any of us who are self-employed entrepreneurs ever really rest on our laurels. If I don’t have some sort of fear that the school will make it, I may become complacent.

Real estate agents who rest in their confidence could possibly begin to let their guard down and to rely on business falling into their laps. It is a known fact that there are certain things you must do to become successful in this business. If you do not do them, your business may still flourish temporarily, but the consistency that is required to carry you into a 30-year career in real estate will be missing, and if the economy turns against us, you will be the first to go.

Yes, I was scared, but even more important, I still allow a tiny fear of failure to creep in once in a while because with that tiny fear comes a sharpened resolve to win. When I am determined to win, I do what needs to be done to be and to stay successful. Our students see that, they pick up on that, and some of them develop that very resolve. Check out our school. We are there for you, and we will acknowledge your fear, and then we will help you put it to work positively! I am TEAM Hughes Real Estate School, and I am waiting to hear from you!
